Middle East Tensions Drive Volatility in Farm Input Prices and Supply Chains

Global Uncertainty Keeping Feed Markets on Edge

The situation in the Middle East continues to influence global commodity markets, with pricing and availability across several key stockfeed products remaining highly volatile.

According to J Swap Stockfoods Sales Manager Joe Hardman, uncertainty surrounding global events is continuing to shape buying behaviour, with many farmers choosing to secure feed well ahead of time rather than risk further market movement.

“It’s not necessarily the events themselves, but the uncertainty around what comes next that’s driving the market,” says Hardman.

“We’re seeing customers take very different approaches, but a significant number have already chosen to lock in supply well in advance to manage both price risk and potential availability constraints.”

Managing Risk in an Uncertain Market

Hardman says there is no clear consensus on where markets will move next, making it increasingly difficult for farmers to know whether to buy now or wait.

“As with any volatile market, waiting for certainty can sometimes come at a cost,” he says.

“Many customers are choosing to secure tonnage now to provide confidence around supply and pricing, rather than leaving themselves exposed if conditions tighten further.”

Shipping Market Adding Further Pressure

Alongside geopolitical uncertainty, global freight markets continue to add pressure to forward pricing.

Hardman says many shipping companies remain reluctant to commit to long-term freight rates while uncertainty persists across international shipping routes.

“Shippers are understandably trying to retain flexibility rather than locking themselves into fixed freight rates while markets remain so unpredictable,” he says.

“That uncertainty is flowing directly into forward product pricing. Without freight being locked in, suppliers need to build additional risk into pricing, which is keeping forward values elevated.”

Until freight markets become more stable, Hardman says it is unlikely there will be any significant easing in forward prices.

Focus on Communication and Planning

While every farming business will have a different appetite for risk, Hardman says having a clear understanding of market conditions allows farmers to make more informed purchasing decisions.

“Our role is to provide customers with transparent market information and clear pricing where we can,” he says.

“There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, but it’s important farmers understand that choosing to wait is also a decision. The key is balancing the cost of committing today against the potential risk of higher prices or reduced availability later on.”

As global events continue to evolve, J Swap Stockfoods will continue working closely with customers to provide timely market updates and help them navigate changing conditions with confidence.
